Open Day at the National Academy of Tailors
23 January 2026With profound sadness, the National Academy of Tailors announces the passing of Master Luigi Fant, a luminous and unforgettable figure of Italian tailoring. Master Fant passed away during the night of January 20, 2026, at the age of 93, leaving an indelible mark on the world of craftsmanship and bespoke tailoring.
Born and raised in the tailoring tradition of the Belluno area, Luigi Fant devoted his entire life to the perfection of the art of dressing. Owner of the historic Sartoria Fant of Limana, he was a point of reference both for the Italian school and for the international dimension of the sector. His work stood out for its elegance, technical precision, and deep passion for artisanal quality—values he was able to pass on to generations of students and colleagues.
Over the course of a long and successful career, Fant took part in the most important tailoring events worldwide, including the World Federation Master Tailor in Salzburg, the International Congress of the Art of Tailoring in Finland, and the World Fashion Show of Academic Masters in China. He received numerous professional and civic honors, culminating in the prestigious title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the Vita da Sarto (Life as a Tailor) Award in 2018, and the Bellunesi nel Mondo Award in 2025.
Among his most celebrated creations, one remains particularly memorable: the mountain outfit made for Pope John Paul II, worn by the Pontiff during an excursion on the Marmolada in 1979, a symbol of the perfect union between functionality and style.
A charismatic and deeply humane figure, Luigi Fant always believed in the value of artisanal training and encouraged young people to pursue a career as tailors, convinced that excellence arises from the union of tradition and innovation.
The National Academy of Tailors expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all those who had the honor of knowing him and working alongside him. His example will continue to inspire our community and the entire world of tailoring. His works, teachings, and critical spirit will remain a precious heritage for future generations.
